Meet Bill Covitz, Ice Artisan
Bill Covitz is the owner of ICE MATTERS™, LLC, an ice carving company he opened in 1999. Before pursuing his passion for ice artistry, Bill built a successful culinary career as a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. As a Chef, he worked in fine dining restaurants throughout the United States, specializing in French cuisine, and also served as a Private Chef in both France and Belgium. Looking to explore his artistic side, Bill traded the heat of the kitchen for the cold of the freezer and returned to his home state of Connecticut to establish his ice carving business.
Today, Bill creates stunning ice masterpieces in his 12-degree studio for country clubs, hotels, banquet facilities, restaurants, and individuals throughout Connecticut. His talent has earned him national and international recognition, including Grand Champion at the 2004 National Ice Carving Association’s Nationals and second place at the 2006 World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska. He continues to create unique ice installations and sculptures while sharing his passion for the art of ice carving with clients around the world.

Mike Matters
He keeps ICE MATTERS™, LLC running smoothly with his expert setups, problem-solving skills, and growing passion for ice carving. Known for his humor and dedication, Mike is an important part of the Ice Matters™ family while enjoying time with his family, dirt biking, golfing, and adventures.
Matt Matters
He is a valued member of the ICE MATTERS™, LLC team, returning after years of working alongside the family. He is a proud father and talented creator, known for his impressive ice carving and wood carving skills, including his memorable giraffe sculpture at Lyman Orchards.
Liam Matters
Liam is pictured wearing the Groot costume he created for Halloween in 2018. He enjoys designing costumes, customizing LEGO builds, sketching, camping, target shooting, 3-D printing, and playing D&D. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2020 and volunteers as an adult Scout leader. He is pictured with his first ice carving, Uni-Kitty, and his custom suit jacket from his first solo wedding setup.
Josh Matters
Josh learned ice carving from Mike and began creating at a young age, including his first chisel work at age 6. He enjoys making custom costumes, gaming, D&D, target shooting, camping, 3-D printing, archery, and volleyball. He stays active through school and Scouts, and created his own Reaper costume from Overwatch for ComiCon.
Jen Matters
Jen is the dedicated office manager behind the family business, balancing her responsibilities as the owner’s wife, a mom, and the friendly voice many customers know and appreciate. Working from home allows her to be part of every aspect of the business while also managing the many roles that come with family life. She enjoys connecting with customers, taking calls, and making sure everyone receives the help and support they need.
Morgan Mattered (RIP)
Our sweet Morgan gave us eleven years of unconditional love and awesomeness.
He will always be remembered and is dearly missed.
Oakley Matters
Who in their right mind gets a puppy at this stage in life? Crazy people like us! Oakley is a hot mess, but he’s absolutely adorable, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. His favorite hobby is “editing” things out of our house — puppies have a way of redecorating, right? And that barking you hear when I’m on the phone? That’s our Oakley, proudly protecting us from anyone and everyone. He may be a little chaotic, but he’s our lovable little protector.

Gary is a seasonal member of the ICE MATTERS team and brings his skills as a Chef Instructor and freelance baker. He is a hardworking family man who shares his talents, creativity, and positive energy with the team.

JP is a talented chef, farmer, and freelance ice sculptor known for his optimism and dedication. He has worked on many demonstrations and large projects, always bringing skill, knowledge, and a great attitude to the team.
